Holden EU

Holden EU project in brief. The project constitutes a concentrated effort to explore social aspects of RF-sensing to guide the technological advance and to derive technology for ethically and privacy compliant perception.

HOLDEN proposes a radically new approach to perception by concisely analysing ethical constraints and privacy risks while re-thinking Radio Frequency (RF)-based sensing. The technology has a transformative positive effect on our economy and society by implementing article 8 of the CFR-EU through establishing necessary conditions for privacy and ethically compliant perception and derives adaptive sensing tools able to respect these constraints.

Implementation of article 8 into technology will enforce personal data protection as a fundamental right (GDPR). HOLDEN constitutes the first concentrated effort to explore social aspects of RF-sensing to guide technological advance towards compliance of ethical and privacy constraints: we develop a model of appropriation, to obtain better understanding of public acceptance of novel sensing-based technology by stimulating the public awareness, considering social interactions, privacy threats and ethical implications.

HOLDEN will radically advance the state-of-the-art by integrating novel functions to establish ethical compliance into a protected hardware module (ethics profile module) on the RF-device, allowing for fine-grained control and ethical filtering of RF signals (see figures on this page).

Science-to-technology breakthrough: Privacy is essential to maintain trust in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), however, new radio technologies such as 6G will enable the acquisition of further personalized information, such as built-in sensing functions, which necessitates technology that is private and ethically compliant by design. The design principles, ethical & privacy frame-work, and new sensing methodology developed, lay the foundation for this break-through technology and will be verified in 3 scenarios as a proof-of-concept. HOLDEN will, via RF-holography, develop privacy promoting intelligent surfaces and building architecture. We develop scatter beamforming to track an arbitrary number of non-Rx/Tx equipped targets. This is drastically different to SotA beamforming which necessitates storage of personalized data and is hence susceptible to data mining attacks. We will develop direction-agnostic recognition of gestures that is privacy-scalable and enables ghosting and obfuscation. This is possible through recognition from multi-antenna, mmWave sparse point-clouds incorporating temporal data, in contrast to dense static point clouds. Adant plans to integrate the concepts in future products for ethically & privacy compliant multi-target RF sensing. Ethical and privacy concerns are indeed opportunities for responsible societal development and introduction of this technology. We expect that it becomes an enabling technique for future cyber-physical systems (CPS) and smart services that will define, stimulate and create incentive in b5G (beyond 5G) instrumentations
